Music Mission, Philosophy and Pattern of
International Kingdom Life International Church
Mission
While our goal is to glorify God in song, we desire to see souls won for the Kingdom, hearts encouraged and burdens lifted. Music is sometimes the only way to reach hearts. Our musicians are to be prepared not only with notes, but also with pure hearts in order that what they sing or play may be a channel pointing to the author of music! Psalm 40:3 says it best: “He put a new song in my mouth, a hymn of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord.” (NIV)
Philosophy
The well known Greek Philosopher Plato when he wrote his epic, The Republic warned against allowing music to be unguarded and ignored. He cautioned that through music a culture revolution could dominate a society. Plato was saying that music is incredibly powerful and often misunderstood for just “play” but we should guard it carefully to ensure that we are still singing the right songs in the right way. If we allow our music to slip, then our “foot shall slide in due time” Deuteronomy 32:35.
Pattern
We believe that there are four basic principles that are the pattern for all Christian Music. All good, quality music will fall into this mold.
Music as testimony to the Working of God:
Music that is Inspired by Great Spiritual Events:
Music in the Wake of Personal Spiritual Triumph:
Music that is based on Revelation
We believe that the music program of our church should have three major purposes;
It should PRAISE GOD
It should GLORIFY GOD:
It should EDIFY BELIEVERS:
We need to look at some of the specifics of our music program and what we do when we select music for our church:
I. The first thing we look for is a STRONG MELODY:
(the way music moves across the page)
Ephesians 5:18-19
II. The second thing we look at is the TEXT and the text should do two things.
III. The third thing we look at is the music’s APPROPRIATENESS for the use in church:
IV. Some general principles that we apply are:
We believe that there are four basic principles that are the pattern for all Christian Music.
Music of the Working of God: Red Sea and Jesus birth (Exodus 13-15, Luke 2:13)
Music of Great Spiritual Events: restoring the temple (Ezra 3)
Music of Personal Spiritual Triumph: David Paul and Silas (1Chron. 15:16-28, Acts 16)
Music of Revelation: praise in heaven (Revelation 5:9)
Three major purposes: praise God (Psalms 40:3), glorify God (1 Cor. 10:17) and edify believers (Eph. 4:29)
Selected Music: Strong melody (Eph. 5:18-19), text soundness (Col.3:16) and appropriate (1 Cor. 6:12)
